Libertarian Governor Candidate Addresses Ballot Questions

Press Release

Date: Oct. 1, 2010

Andrew Gray, the Libertarian Gubernatorial Candidate for Kansas Governor, encourages Kansas voters to support both of the constitutional amendment questions that will appear on the Kansas General Election Ballot in November.

Constitutional Amendment Question #1 amends to the Constitution of Kansas to specifically protect the right of Kansans to keep and bear arms for the defense of self, family, home and state, for lawful hunting and recreational use, and for any other lawful purpose. Gray says that the Libertarian Party of Kansas (LPKS) has been the most consistent political party in support of the second amendment. He points out that not only has the LPKS supported the right to bear arms at the state level, but they have stood at the forefront of local battles to protect the right of law abiding Kansans to keep and bear arms. Gray says, "Not only does this proposed amendment follow the ideals expressed within the 2nd Amendment by our founding fathers, but it treats law abiding Kansans as capable adults." He goes on to say that commitment to treating fellow citizens as capable adults is a crucial principle that his team uses in evaluating every aspect of their platform and response to every issue. "I encourage Kansas voters to affirm our state's commitment to the right to keep and bear arms," said Gray, "and to acknowledge the responsibility of Kansans to treat each other as capable adults and respect the liberty of others by voting in support of this amendment."

Constitutional Amendment Question #2 strikes language from the Kansas constitution that empowers the state government to exclude persons from voting because of mental illness. While the Kansas Legislature has never exercised this power, Gray says that the language should be struck from the Kansas Constitution. "One of the basic principles of the Libertarian Party of Kansas is that every law must apply equally to everyone, every time. As currently written the Constitution clearly does not apply the law equally to all law abiding citizens and I encourage all Kansas voters to correct this by voting in support of this amendment."
